  • Nigel’s story begins like most good stories with an old and rare book, THE INDIA DIRECTORY OR DIRECTIONS FOR SAILING TO AND FROM THE EAST INDIES BY JAMES HORSBURGH, the fifth edition VOLUME TWO. On page 188 there is the following brief entry ‘The Belvidere Shoals: ….was wrecked on these shoals a large Chinese junk, part of whose crew reached Gaspar Island, and others, who were found floating on fragments of the wreck, were saved by the laudable exertions of a country ship belonging to Calcutta’.
